Up in Smoke (1978) started as a low-budget stoner comedy, but it unexpectedly became a pop culture landmark. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong turned improvised chaos into a defining voice of counterculture humor, and audiences embraced its laid-back rebellion. Part of that rebellion included their original movie poster which featured the infamous tagline: "Don't go straight to see this movie." It was a brilliant triple entendre that poked fun at the audience's habits and the era's social rigidity. Fearing it encouraged drug use, censors and theater owners pulled the poster from several cities. Ironically, the ban backfired—the controversy turned the film into a "must-see" event and made this specific artwork a holy grail for collectors.
